Competitive Program - Cavaliers      (Tryouts on September 11th and 18th, 2010 @ All Saints HS)

KYBA offers competitive basketball for boys and girls from ages 10 to 18. All KYBA competitive teams play in the Eastern Ontario Basketball Association (EOBA) league and participate in the Basketball Ontario provincial championships (Ontario Cup).

The level and number of competitive teams fielded by KYBA remains the sole responsibility of the KYBA Board of Executives. The following factors are taken into consideration:

  • Level of interest at the specific age group
  • Underlying ability of the participants
  • Availability of certified coaches
  • Availability of gyms
  • Parent support of the program

For the 2010-2011 season KYBA Board of Executives decided to hold tryouts for the following competitive teams:

  • Minor Atom    ( U11 - born 2000 or later)  – Boys
  • Major Atom    ( U12 - born 1999 or later)  – Boys and Girls
  • Minor Bantam ( U13 - born 1998 or later) – Boys
  • Major Bantam ( U14 - born 1997 or later) – Boys and Girls
  • Major Midget  ( U16 - born 1995 or later) – Boys and Girls
  • Junior               ( U19 - born 1992 or later) – Girls

All players willing to play competitive basketball must first be registered as a member of KYBA. Registration can be done by mail in or face to face (during 1st tryouts session in early September).

Extra costs involved with playing competitive basketball are significant both financially and time commitment wise. There are: 3 two-hours practices per week (including 1 on Saturday), games, and out of town tournaments to consider. Each competitive team works under its own budget and would be responsible for its own costs. During tryouts, Head Coach would be able to give an estimate of additional fees and fundraising expectations required for the upcoming season.

All players registered with KYBA are invited and encouraged to try out for our competitive program too.

Tryouts (skill evaluation) are used to select the KYBA's competitive teams. Evaluations are conducted by the coaching stuff for each division. Ball handling, shooting, physical capabilities, (speed, vertical leap, ..) and court skills (understanding of the game) are factors used to evaluate the player's relative skill level. Player selection is the sole responsibility of the appointed coaching staff and their decision is final. Competitive coaches or members of the KYBA Board of Executives will not engage in any debates with players and/or parents over competitive team rosters unless clear evidence of bias/discrimination is presented in writing to KYBA VP Competitive Milan Colic.

Tryout schedule will be posted up: on our website, in the Kanata Kourier community newspaper, as well as other convenient media. Tentative tryout dates are: Saturday 11-Sep-2010 and 18-Sep-2010 at All Saints Catholic High School (5115 Kanata Ave., Kanata, K2K3K5).
