KYBA HOUSE LEAGUE Selects
(Kanata timberwolves)
The main focus of the Selects program is player skill development, and exposure to the competitive style of play.
Each KYBA Selects team comprises House League players chosen for the Selects program, essentially functioning as a House League ‘All-Star’ team.
Coaches select players based on their skills, abilities, and eagerness to engage with basketball, learn the game, and enhance their skills. The Selects program is primarily aimed at players in their final year of an age division, serving as a goal for them to aspire toward before that last year. Players on competitive teams are not eligible for selection to a Selects team.
The Selects program focuses on developing player skills and providing exposure to a more competitive style of play. Consequently, players are expected to exhibit greater discipline and attentiveness than typically required on a House League team. The Selects program is intended to complement the House League experience and should not interfere with participants’ regular House League commitments.
Selects teams have the opportunity to engage in exhibition games and competitive tournaments. Selects players also continue to participate in their House League teams. While the Selects program demands a greater commitment than the House League alone, it requires less than that of the Competitive program.

What is the selection process for Selects teams?
Selection Process
Selects rosters are formed, after house league teams are formed. Players are recommended and ultimately selected when they demonstrate the required criteria, including:
- Above average skill level for the player’s age group
- Excellent “coachability” – discipline, attentiveness and understanding of the game
- An interest and enthusiasm for the game
- Commitment to attending practices and games
Selects coaches should explain the structure of the Selects program and the additional commitment required before selecting a player for a Selects team.
Recommendations vs. Tryout – House League coaches are often asked to recommend players for the Selects team. The coach recommendation is to identify players with the right skills, commitment and attitude for the objectives of the Selects program. If the total number of recommended and/or interested players fits within the guidelines of the team, it may not be necessary to have a tryout.
If more players are interested than can be fit on the teams (more than 14 players per team), then the Selects coaches may elect to run a tryout process
What is the KYBA House League Selects Program Philosophy ?
KYBA HL Selects Program Philosophy
The KYBA Selects program is grounded in principles that support player development.
* Commitment and Responsibility: Players must prioritize responsibilities outside basketball, like homework and family duties, and fulfill their house league obligations first. Being a student-athlete means participation in Selects shouldn't overshadow other commitments, and we emphasize this from an early age.
* Accessibility: Selects teams aim to include as many players as possible, encouraging those with the skills and desire to explore their potential.
* Skill Development: Players enhance their skills through more demanding practices and competitive games beyond house league experiences. Some teams may participate in tournaments during house league breaks.
* Improvement of House League Play: Selects players gain experience that fosters leadership and skill development, benefiting their House League teams.
* Foundation for Competitive Teams: The Selects program introduces players to competitive basketball and offers those interested in future teams a chance to develop their skills against tougher competition, but participation does not guarantee future selection for Ottawa Next Level.

When and where the Selects team practicing?
Selects teams practice
One of the main benefits of the Selects program is the opportunity for additional practice(s) and additional coaching.
Practice times may also be used for intra-squad scrimmages or exhibition games. Selects coaches will provide further information of the time and location of the additional practice once players have been selected.
Selects teams have an additional weekly practice of 2 hours, over and above their house league team commitments.
What is the additioanl cost to particiapte in Selects program?
The Selects program is an extension of the KYBA House League program.
There is an additional cost for players that choose to participate in the Selects program. There is an $150 Selects registration fee payable to KYBA.
This fee covers Selects uniforms, additional facility access and registration with EOBA (Eastern Ontario Basketball Association). There will also be team fees payable to the team Treasurer. These fees are collected to cover the cost of referees for EOBL and exhibition games, tournament entry fees, and any other team-building or development the team plans for. Additional costs may also be required if a Selects team chooses to participate in out of town tournaments.
Depending on the level of participation of the Selects team, these costs may vary but will be communicated to players and their families early in the year. Selects coaches should hold a meeting with the parents of potential participants prior to selection, in order to discuss the planned level of competition and expectations for the Selects team, including cost.
Players may also be asked to participate in some fundraising events to help raise funds for the Selects team
How do Selects teams organize exhibition games?
Selects teams may also be participating in the EOBA league for some age levels. For teams that are not directly participating in the EOBA, the coaching staff may schedule exhibition games against competitive level, or other Selects, teams. These games will be scheduled around regular House League activities. All Selects players are expected to remain committed to their House League teams, and are expected to attend House League practices and games.
In some cases, the number of Selects players may exceed the number of players required for a game (10-12 players). In those cases, the Selects coaching staff will determine which players will be asked to participate for that event. These decisions are solely up to the discretion of the coaching staff and may be based on factors such as:
- Player skill level
- Skill level of opposition
- Effort and commitment demonstrated at practice
- Attendance at practices
- Availability
- Previous decisions on participation
Carrying more than 12 players through the Selects program will allow for flexibility for the coaches, players and parents.
Due to the additional time, travel or costs that may be associated with the Selects program, there may be events in which some players will not be able to participate. Carrying additional players in the program will allow for a team to be fielded in cases where some players are unable to participate.
